Exploring Laser Therapy as an Adjunct Treatment for Alcoholism

The use of auricular acupuncture has been acknowledged for its efficacy in treating alcohol addiction. To further explore this method, a recent research study delved into the possibility of enhancing auricular acupuncture by incorporating biostimulation of the entire body. The study aimed to assess the therapeutic benefits of this integrated approach in individuals suffering from alcohol dependence syndrome.

Fifty-three individuals with alcohol addiction were recruited for a study that involved a treatment regimen comprising two different types of laser therapy across four sessions. The treatment plan included 20 consecutive daily sessions of helium-neon laser stimulation on the neck, followed by 10 auricular acupuncture treatments using an argon laser administered every other day.The mental state of the participants was evaluated using the Beck Depression Inventory-Fast Screen (BDI-FS) before the commencement of the sessions and after a two-month period of treatment. In addition to the mental health assessment, the beta-endorphin plasma levels were measured five times using the radioimmunoassay (RIA) method throughout the study.

The research results showed positive outcomes in both psychological and biochemical areas. Significant improvements were observed in BDI-FS scores, indicating better mood and psychological well-being after laser therapy sessions. Furthermore, there was a noticeable increase in beta-endorphin levels, suggesting a positive effect on neurochemical pathways associated with addiction.

The results indicate that laser therapy could be a valuable supplementary option for individuals struggling with alcoholism. Through the integration of auricular acupuncture techniques and whole-body biostimulation, laser therapy presents a non-intrusive method to enhance conventional addiction treatment methods.

To summarize, this study provides valuable insights into the potential of laser therapy as an additional method to address alcohol addiction. Although additional research is necessary to confirm these results, the study emphasizes the significance of exploring novel strategies in the field of addiction treatment.
